WHEN FOUR TEENAGE OUTCASTS BECOME EXPERTS IN THE ANCIENT ARTS OF WITCHCRAFT, THEY SEEK REVENGE ON THOSE WHO SLIGHTED THEM IN THE PAST.Amazon.com
If Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents the lighter side of high school as a macabre experience, here’s a movie that asks the burning question, “What happens when angst-ridden teenagers develop supernatural powers?” More to the point, how do four outcast teenaged witches handle their ability to cast wicked spells on the taunting classmates who’ve nicknamed them “The Bitches of Eastwick”? The answer, of course, is “don’t get mad, get even.” That’s about all there is to this terminally silly movie, which makes up for its ludicrous plot by letting its young female cast have a field day as they indulge their dark fantasies. Fairuza Balk is enjoyable as the most wicked of the witches, and is therefore the focus of the film’s most dazzling special effects. But it’s Neve Campbell from television’s Party of Five who made this film a modest box-office hit, just before she became her generation’s fright-movie favorite in Scream and its popular sequel. –Jeff Shannon

Now, to be honest, I did not watch the WHOLE movie, but I saw enough.

From what I saw, this movie portrays magick and spellcasting quite accurately.

In one scene, the charecters cast the “Light as a feather, stiff as a board” spell. This spell is not fiction. It is real. How do I know? Because I researched magickal spells to an extent. Also, the witches in this movie curse people they don’t like.

    I cannot recommend this movie.

Ok, this movie S[tinks]. Let me break it down for you:
    1) These girls can’t act.
    2) Witchcraft and magick and wicca and all that stuff is BOGUS. As in, NOT REAL. As in, PEOPLE CANNOT CAST SPELLS.
    3) The plot is retarded.
    4) Did I mention that witchcraft is stupid?
There were some entertaining parts to the movie, like when they were performing their “rituals”, which was so ridiculous as to make me poop my pants with laughter. I probably pooped myself 7 or 8 times while watching this movie. The only hope I had was that the 4 girls would have some sort of kinky orgy, but that never happened. Avoid at all costs if you have an ounce of brains.

So any of you that think Witchcraft/Wicca is bogus, yeah you’re just like the people that think Christianity is bogus. It’s a religion, and this movie does not portray it right. And the thing with the crosses, yeah, the day I did a report on Wicca in a class i wore my cross. It’s just something to wear, it has nothing to do with anything. Whatever. This movie is okay, aside from the fact that it spawned a billion little teeny boppers deciding that they thought they were witches. It does have a decent message though how not to mess with the powers. I’d rather watch Charmed.

I give The Craft three starts because
I found it was entertaining enough. That’s it. As for whether it realistically portrayed witchcraft–cough! cough!–WHO CARES!
The only thing real about witchcraft is the persecution suffered by many charlatans and muddled-brained folks, as well as quite a few innocents, in the hands of people even more warped. And Wicca–what is Wicca? Simply a twentieth-century invention. That whole Goddess story, as anyone who’s at least half informed knows, is nothing more than the product of the thesis of a very imaginative female anthropologist, whose name I do not wish to remember (as Cervantes would put it) so that those curious enough do a little research and find the truth on their own.
If you’re a kid, well, hopefully, you’ll grow up one day.
The Craft is alright; mediocre, tolerable, passable. The acting is quite bad, but that’s probably the director’s fault–the actors hover between dramatic and dark comedic histrionics. The story is mediocre. Some of the effects are cool. Entertaining enough.
